Duch Claims Indigence; Assigned Two Co-Defense Counsel

PRESS RELEASE

1 August 2007

On 31 July 2007, Mr Kaing Guek Eav selected two co-lawyers from the list to represent him before the ECCC, Mr KAR Savuth and Mr François ROUX.

Mr Kaing has stated that he does not have the means to pay for his lawyers and so they have been assigned by the Defence Support Section for payment by the ECCC.

KAR Savuth has represented Mr Kaing for the past 8 years. He has worked as a lawyer since 1982, joining the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia on its creation in 1995, since when he has defended many criminal clients.

François ROUX is a French avocat who has practised law for over 30 years. He has defended four cases of genocide at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, including obtaining a not guilty verdict in the case of Bagilishema. He was also a member of the defence team for Zacarias MOUSSAOUI, implicated in the September 11th attacks in New York. On 31 July 2007, Mr ROUX filed his application for registration with the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. Whilst Mr Roux's application is being considered he is not able to speak to the court but has been appointed as a Legal Consultant to assist in the preparation of the case.
